Measure Blood Flow With Ultrasound

This is a project as a part of my undergraduate thesis under Prof. LE's guidance. Our purpose is to build a demo system to help students from Physics Department and Medical College understand the principle of blood flow measurement and how to optimize the system performance.

Because of Doppler effect, ultrasound can be used to measure the speed of an object. For example, the speed meter which the police use to measure car velocity is based on ultrasound and doppler effect. That car runs on road is like blood cell flows in blood. Therefore, we can also measure blood flow by measuring the velocity of blood cell. There is no doubt that how fast a blood cell moves in blood is positively correlated to the actual blood flow speed.
